S.A.W. – Sports, Adventure & Wilderness
At our The Place Independent School, we recognise that traditional PE lessons are not always the most meaningful or accessible way for every child and young person to engage in physical activity. That is why we offer S.A.W. (Sports, Adventure and Wilderness) as an inclusive alternative to conventional PE.
S.A.W. is designed to support the physical, emotional and sensory needs of children and young people with special educational needs and disabilities, while encouraging confidence, independence and enjoyment of movement. What is S.A.W.?
S.A.W. (Sports, Adventure and Wilderness) is a practical, outdoor-focused programme that replaces traditional PE lessons. It provides children and young people with structured opportunities to be active through exploration, adventure and real-life physical experiences rather than competitive sports. Sessions are carefully adapted to meet individual needs, with a strong emphasis on engagement, safety and personal achievement.
What activities are included?
S.A.W. activities may include:
• Outdoor adventure games and team challenges
• Nature walks and woodland exploration
• Forest-school-style activities
• Bushcraft and basic survival skills
• Problem-solving and cooperative tasks
• Low-impact physical activities that build strength, balance and coordination
• Sensory-rich movement experiences Activities are adapted to suit all ability levels and focus on participation rather than performance.
Why do we offer S.A.W. instead of PE?
Many of our pupils find traditional PE lessons overwhelming due to sensory sensitivities, social anxiety, fine and gross motor challenges or difficulties with competitive environments.
S.A.W. offers a more flexible, therapeutic and child-centred approach that:
• Reduces pressure and anxiety
• Supports emotional regulation and wellbeing
• Builds confidence through achievable challenges
• Encourages positive relationships and teamwork
• Develops physical skills in a meaningful, real-world context
How does S.A.W. support learning and development?
S.A.W. supports children and young people in developing:
• Physical health and motor skills
• Communication and social interaction
• Emotional resilience and self-esteem
• Independence and problem-solving skills
• Awareness of nature and the environment
These skills directly support children and young people’s EHCP outcomes and overall development.
Is S.A.W. safe?
Yes. All activities are risk-assessed and delivered by trained staff who understand the individual needs of our children and young people. Safety, supervision and appropriate challenge are central to every session.
A positive approach to physical activity
S.A.W. allows our children young people to experience movement in a way that is enjoyable, purposeful and accessible. By focusing on adventure, exploration and personal success, we help children and young people develop a positive relationship with physical activity that can last a lifetime.
